Dog Spray Collar

The dog spray collar is an ideal solution for stopping the “nuisance” barking of your pet dog. Using a dog spray collar is both safe and a humane way to train your dog not to bark inappropriately.

If you are having a problem with your dog’s nuisance barking, you will know how embarrassing and annoying this behaviour can be. Typically when you try to address your dogs barking inappropriately at the time, it is very ineffective. I know I felt very uncomfortable and helpless trying to apologize for my dogs barking, while the dog is still barking and not responding to my commands to stop.

How does a Dog Spray Collar Work?

When your dog barks when wearing a dog spray collar it triggers a release of a harmless scented spray. This method uses four of the dogs five senses to train them not to bark. The dogs see it, hear it, feel it, and smell the spray. Most dog spray collars contain a citronella spray which most dogs do not like.

When the dog barks and the spray is released there is an annoying hissing sound. The spray is released around the dog’s neck and face which usually stops the dog because of the unpleasant distraction. As soon as the dog barks and it hears the noise, feels, the mist, sees the spray, smells the Citronella. The dog quickly learns by association of these sensations to stop barking.

Types of Dog Spray Collar

There are two main types of dog spray collar that dog owners can purchase.

The first type, and  the one that most dog owners prefer, is the automatic dog spray collar. Popular automatic dog spray collar are made by PetSafe, Innotek and MultiVet. This type of collar has vibration sensors and a microphone which is triggered by the noise of the bark. Usually these sensors are attached to the dog collar and are powered by battery. So therefore it is important to make sure to check the battery power and replace it when necessary. The sensors are programmed to release a harmless citronella spray into the dog’s face when the dog barks. The dog becomes trained not to bark over time, as it learns to anticipate the spray when it has the urge to bark. Gradually the dog learns not to bark to avoid the spray and this becomes a habit.

When you first start to use the dog spray, you may find you need to adjust the spray. There are controls on the collar for you to do that. The benefit of this collar is that the dog owner does not need to be around for the collar to work. Because it works automatically the owner can rest assured that when the dog is wearing the collar the dog owner does not need to be physically present if their dog starts to bark. This can foster much better relations with your neighbours. Many dog training professionals recommend this type of collar as the best way to train a dog to stop barking.

The second type of dog spray collar is activated by remote control. This type of collar is usually used by professional dog trainers, and the can be used for training a dog in many other areas as well as preventing nuisance barking. The remote-control collar comes with an handheld activation control unit which is held by the dog  owner or trainer and triggered by a button. The range of the remote-control is around 100 m which is usually quite sufficient. The benefit of this type dog spray collar is that it is only activated when the dogs barking is inappropriate. Naturally not all of a dog’s barking needs to be controlled. Another benefit of the remote-control dog spray collar is that it can be used for other types of training such as obedience training as well training the dog not to bark. A remote control dog spray collar are more expensive that the automatic collars. PetSafe, Premier, and MultiVet, produce good remote control dog spray collars.

Most dog owners who have used the dog spray collar, highly recommend it because it is effective, and does not use  pain or shock as alternative training methods, such as an electric shock collar, or ultrasonic collar.
